Na obrzeżach maleńkiej wioski Szyldak, położonej w województwie warmińsko-mazurskim, w powiecie ostródzkim, w gminie Ostróda, w otoczeniu pól uprawnych, z dala od zabudowań, położony jest Dom Pomocy Społecznej, przeznaczony dla 100 osób przewlekle psychicznie chorych – schorzeniem dominującym wśród mieszkańców jest schizofrenia.. Domem kieruje Fundacja Polskich Kawalerów Maltańskich w Warszawie „Pomoc Maltańska”. DPS powstał w 1991 roku, mieści się w dwukondygnacyjnym budynku po byłym hotelu robotniczym miejscowej Stacji Hodowli Roślin. Przez ponad 25 ostatnich lat budynek był wielokrotnie modernizowany i przebudowywany – dziś spełnia wysokie standardy mieszkalne oraz pozbawiony jest barier architektonicznych.
Najbliższe otoczenie to zwarty kompleks zieleni, chroniący mieszkańców przed hałasem z ruchliwej trasy Warszawa – Gdańsk. Baza mieszkaniowa to pięcioosobowe segmenty mieszkalne (pokoje dwu- i trzyosobowe) zabezpieczone węzłem sanitarnym, mieszczące się na dwóch piętrach budynku. Ponadto mieszkańcy mają do dyspozycji pralnię, kuchnię, stołówkę, kaplicę, warsztat tkacki, zaplecze terapeutyczne oraz rehabilitacyjne, a także świetlice, pokoje dziennego pobytu.
DPS zapewnia całodobową opiekę, pomoc medyczną, zajęcia rehabilitacyjne oraz zróżnicowaną terapię zajęciową – np. zajęcia plastyczne, tkackie, muzyczne – w Domu działa zespół wokalno-instrumentalny „Tacy Sami”, którego występy stanowią punkt artystyczny wielu uroczystości.
